I've probably sent hundreds of rejection letters to publishers over the years. When I recently started writing short stories, a new genre for me, I decided to only submit to journals and mags who accepted e-submissions. It freed me! It empowered me! It is oh so fast! And it saves on money and trees. It has also led to two e-book acceptances.

First I must tell you that I am a hybrid of old and new. I was very slow to warm up to the Internet. That said, back in the 90s I had some time to play around on a computer for two consecutive Snow Days (minus students) in the school library, so I tried to come up to speed. In the process, I discovered that I could submit my poetry online to a really cool Irish journal: THE STINGING FLY. So, I figured it all out, slowly typed my submission into the body of an email (no easy task with line breaks, etc.!), and clicked SEND. Long story short: they accepted my work, and I was hooked forever.

It was Paul Oh and my Summer Institute in the Western Massachusetts Writing Project that got me hooked as we used blogging for writing and sharing, and I realized the potential for the classroom. And then, I started to dive in to see what other possibilities were emerging. That was seven or eight years ago now.

The day that I realized I had stopped writing a first draft in longhand & that my fingers started automatically tryping a computer key board when the muse came calling. I never felt an urge to type on a typewriter. hated typing then. Now my fingers run over the keyboard as if they were piano keys, making music. Brenda

When my English classes started being placed in computer labs only, I realized that the Internet and technology would forever change the way I teach writing to students on a daily basis.
